Canadian nuclear service provider Aecon marked a significant milestone on Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program and Major Component Replacement (“MCR”) Project, with all eight steam generators now placed into Unit 3.
Aecon is a part of the Steam Generator Replacement Team (SGRT)—a 50/50 joint venture between Aecon and SGT (a partnership between Framatome Canada Ltd. and United Canadian Operations Ltd.), who worked collaboratively with Bruce Power to lift the original 100-tonne (110-ton) steam generators out through the facility’s roof and lift the new steam generators into place.
SGRT’s full scope of work as part of the steam generator replacement project includes engineering and planning activities, the removal of existing steam generators, the installation of new steam generators, construction management and procurement of materials, and construction activities.
They completed steam generator replacement work on Unit 6, which was reconnected to Ontario’s electricity grid in September 2023. The Unit 3 MCR outage, which began in 2023, remains on track as Bruce Power and its partners look to return the renewed unit to service in 2026.
