Architecture studio PARTISANS has proposed three energy-efficient designs for the Charles Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain (Peace Fountain) rejuvenation project, located on the Detroit River in Windsor, Ont.

All of the three sustainable design options rely on clean technology by harnessing renewable energy generated by the Detroit River’s currents. Using a submersible turbine, the fountain is set to generate surplus energy, surpassing its consumption on a net-annual basis.

PARTISANS initiated the redesign process by delving into the collective memories and sentiments linked with the Peace Fountain, a revered landmark. They used an intergenerational, value-centered design approach, encouraging the community to share personal stories. These stories formed the basis for identifying key values that would steer the project.

As a result of this process, three design options were proposed—water-based, land-based, and a hybrid of both. While being highly different in form, substrate, and cost, each option reflects community-informed values such as all-season operation, public arts integration, and support for continuous temporary programming.

The water-based option features an illuminated orb capable of enduring winter conditions and transforming into a timeless fountain in the summer—a nod to community memories. The land-based design features a sprawling, land-rooted arc over the bay, while the hybrid option extends the riverfront boundary, integrating an innovative berm to counteract rising water levels of the Detroit River.
