After its four-year expansion, the BMO Centre at Stampede Park in Calgary’s Culture and Entertainment District is set to open on June 5. For decades, the centre has been a hub for consumer and trade shows, special events, meetings, and conventions.
The 52,490 m2 (565,000 sf) of new space has undertaken an approach to minimize its environmental footprint. The centre now has 9,522 m2 (102,500 sf) of new exhibit hall space, 6,317 m2 (68,000 sf) of meeting room space, a central hub and atrium, public art sites, market cafe, and parking spaces. In addition, 1,500 unique lighting soffits will grace the 51 m (170 ft) curved canopy.
The expansion’s sustainability initiatives include optimizing the building’s energy performance, reducing water use, managing on-site storm water, planting drought-tolerant landscaping, and diverting high quantities of construction and demolition waste from the landfill. Ninety four percent of the construction waste was diverted from the landfill and recycled for use in other projects.
The construction was completed by PCL Construction, with project manager M3 Project Management.
The architectural team who led the design and delivery of this project is Stantec Architecture, Populas, and S2 Architecture.
