A new radioactive waste management facility (Port Hope, Ont.) has received $4.5 million worth of equipment for its water treatment plant.
The plant has received four water units and three water filtration tanks that will be used as part of the facility’s two-stage reverse osmosis treatment process. This plant is being constructed on the existing Welcome Waste Management Facility site.
The facility is one of two being constructed as part of the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI). The second facility is located in nearby Clarington, Ont.
Included in both locations are safe storage areas of low-level radioactive waste in contained mounds. The Port Hope waste-isolating mound will occupy 22 ha (2200 acre) of the site and be three storeys tall. This radioactive waste was generated by radium and uranium refining that took place from 1930 to 1980.
PHAI is a federal environmental cleanup initiative and the Port Hope infrastructure will be capable of treating up to a total of 250,000 m3 (8.82 million cf) of waste annually.
