Toronto to transform Athletes Village

Once the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games are over, Toronto’s Athletes Village will be transformed into a new waterfront neighbourhood—Canary District.

A former brownfield site, the 14-ha (35-acre) mixed-use space will contain eight buildings, including condominiums, affordable housing, and George Brown College student residences.

Developed by Dundee Kilmer Developments LP, and designed by KPMB Architects, the buildings will be located in the city’s West Don Lands.

The 369-unit condominium tower will contain one- and two-bedroom suites, townhomes, and lofts. It will also house a party room, billiard room, and dining room for residents and their guests. The structure is being constructed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold, while incorporating local materials throughout.

The building’s façade will be constructed with stone, metal, and glass; hardwood and engineered floors will cover the interior.

The neighbourhood also includes pedestrian networks to ensure maximum walkability, open and transparent streetscapes, and large-scale building windows and balconies. Street-level amenities will include retail stores, cafés, and restaurants, as well as accessible community and recreational services at the base of residential buildings.
