Leon’s Furniture Ltd. has obtained approval to rezone a 16.2-ha (40-acre) parcel of land near its Toronto headquarters, paving the way for the construction of 4,000 new homes.

The development, situated at the interchange of Highways 400 and 401, will not only feature residential units, but also house a new flagship retail store and Leon’s corporate headquarters.

According to a report by BNN Bloomberg[2], the diverse housing options will encompass townhouses, mid- and high-rise buildings, and community spaces. While talking to BNN Bloomberg, Leon’s CEO, Michael Walsh, expressed enthusiasm about the venture, citing a substantial opportunity in the housing market while emphasizing the company’s ongoing commitment to its core business of furniture and mattresses.

The report further states the next phase involves collaborating with the City of Toronto to finalize a “secondary plan,” expected to conclude by mid-2025. Walsh outlined the project’s two phases, beginning with the construction of the new head office and retail store, followed by the broader community development. The company aims for a swift progression, having already decided on the regeneration area. Leon’s home office has been situated on the property since 1969.
