Each year, the AIA Canada Design Awards recognize best practices, innovative thinking, and design excellence.

The 2024 awards programs invited entries in the categories of Architecture, Community-Engaged Design, Interior Architecture, Residential, Special Projects, Student, Unbuilt, and Urban Design.

Waterworks in Toronto, Ont., integrates a diverse program to rehabilitate, conserve, and expand the industrial Art Deco heritage site.

The entirety of the existing Art Deco style of the building is retained and restored establishing opportunities for new pedestrian connections and pathways through the block, enhancing neighbourhood connectivity and porosity.

The project combines food-focused retail, a fully serviced YMCA offering health and wellness facilities, a mid-rise condominium with family-oriented and affordable units, and an existing youth shelter.
