A new agreement means Misissauga-based Swallow Acoustic Consultants Limited (SACL) will be acquired by engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti. SACL specializes in noise and vibration assessment and control, and also offers expert witness testimony and technical writing services.

The 13-person firm also has an office in Ottawa, and is particularly active in central and eastern Canada, meaning it will help Thornton Tomasetti establish a more prominent Canadian presence. The acquisition should also improve the larger firm’s structural engineering and forensics capabilities.

In addition to working toward comparable goals, with SACL designing tuned mass dampers (TMDs) to stabilize buildings against motion and Thornton Tomasetti developing a fluid harmonic disruptor for a similar purpose, the two firms have collaborated on many projects.

These include:

  • LaGuardia School for the Arts in New York City;
  • Chifley Tower in Sydney, Australia;
  • Soldier Field in Chicago;
  • Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha; and
  • T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“For nearly 30 years, Swallow has been our go-to partner for vibration issues,” says Thomas Z. Scarangello, Thornton Tomasetti’s CEO. “Through our close collaboration on many diverse projects, we have built a strong working relationship based on mutual respect and a shared commitment to professional excellence. This combination of our complementary services will help us build upon our leadership position and provide better value to our clients.”

SACL’s founder, John Swallow, will become a principal at Thornton Tomasetti, with SACL vice presidents Ramin Behboudi and Michael Wesolowsky also joining as associate principals.
