Canadian projects earn galvanizing awards

Three Canadian projects are among the winners of the 2014 Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Awards, presented by American Galvanizers Association (AGA).

The program recognizes the versatility of hot-dip galvanizing in more than 100 projects. Submissions are judged by a panel of architects and engineers and awards are presented in 14 categories.

Updated MasterFormat now available

CSC and CSI have released MasterFormat 2014 Update, which includes several significant revisions from the previous edition of the design/construction industry’s organizational standard.

One of the new additions is the inclusion of a “selective demolition” section in most divisions. These sections provide information on incorporating demolition into building plans.

Aboriginal clean energy projects starting up across Canada

Successful clean energy projects from Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples are increasing across the country.

Spearheaded by Aboriginal communities, these projects harness hydro, wind, biomass, and solar power. It is estimated by the end of 2015 more than 60 projects will be in operation, generating 1400 megawatts (MW) of electricity. At the end of last year, 46 projects were already up and running.

Updating MasterFormat

Co-published by CSC and CSI, the MasterFormat 2014 Update includes hundreds of revisions from the previous 2012 update. Among the key revisions were changes to agreements contained in Division 00–Procurement and Contracting Requirements to account for evolving contract delivery processes in the construction industry as a whole.

Specification process changes examined in new study

New U.K. research suggests the longevity of specifications is increasing as they continue to become an integral part of building information modelling (BIM).

Some of the survey’s findings include the majority of respondents stated updating the specifications throughout the life of a building benefits entire project teams. Further, more than one-third of respondents agreed they shared specification documents outside of their firms, with nearly half of those anticipating changes or additions from other parties.

Options for waste reduction and diversion

Depending on a particular project scope, construction and demolition (C&D) waste from commercial buildings can have wide and varied dimensions. Waste prevention includes a discussion on building design and material selection, whereas ‘diversion’ may examine building deconstruction, source separation, material reuse, and recyclability options. There are also factors such as regulations, cost, and time to consider.
