New plans for Edmonton skyline revealed

Last week, plans to change Edmonton’s skyline with a new 62-storey tower were announced.

The future home to the headquarters of engineering and consulting firm Stantec, it will stand 227 m (735 ft) tall—soaring above the 149-m (489-ft) Epcor Tower, and the 146-m (479-ft) Manulife Tower. Plans for the structure came about following the closure of the City Centre Airport and the restrictions on surrounding building heights.

Historic bridge gets a bright new look

Edmonton’s 102-year-old High Level Bridge has been given a facelift with a colourful light-emitting diode (LED) assembly.

The bridge’s pedestrian walkway is now illuminated by more than 50,000 colour-changing luminaries mounted above the path. Unveiled on Canada Day, the lights have been programmed to change in intensity and colour to alter the look of the bridge throughout the night.

Two Calgary firms, Zeidler Partnership Architects and BKDI Architects, have merged to form Zeidler BKDI Architects.

Together, the firms have 15 years of collaboration experience and the merge recognizes their common philosophy and experience as a multi-jurisdictional professional practice. Effective this month, the new firm has 70 employees in Calgary, and will also utilize resources from Zeidler’s firms worldwide.

Grant MacEwan University (Edmonton) is an innovative educational institution focused on student learning. The school also strives to exemplify the value of environmental stewardship throughout the 139,354-m2 (1.5-million sf) campus. In January 2010, MacEwan initiated a project to replace all 6500 T12 fluorescent luminaries with volumetric lighting fixtures well suited for school, hospital, and office applications.

Five steps to an emergency response plan

This year, Canadians have seen some severe weather. Currently, Southern Alberta is still rebuilding after one of the worst floods in the province’s history. High River, Canmore, and Calgary saw more than 100 mm (4 in.) of rain in less than 48 hours. A total of 32 states of emergency were declared, and communities were placed under evacuation orders. Damage included the Scotiabank Saddledome being submerged, Highway 1 was washed away, and entire towns were cut off by rising waters, along with mudslides.
