Montreal’s cityscape is set to undergo a shift with the introduction of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), a groundbreaking light metro system. Designed by the collaborative efforts of Lemay, Bisson Fortin, and Perkins&Will, the REM’s inaugural Rive-Sud line showcases a visionary approach to sustainable urban infrastructure.
The REM, poised to become one of the world’s longest automated light metro systems, is taking a significant step towards a more connected and eco-friendly future for public transportation in Montreal. Covering 15 km (9.32 miles) with four stations, the consortium’s design offers a glimpse into the REM’s full 26-station system.
Alexis Légaré of Lemay emphasizes the excitement surrounding the REM stations’ designs, which highlights their contribution to efficiently generating sustainable urban infrastructure. The Rive-Sud line introduces a fresh sequencing to Montreal’s urban landscape, featuring accessible, bright, and environmentally sensitive stations with distinctive local identities, characterized by open forms with strong horizontal and vertical lines, natural light, wood accents, and transparent glass. They integrate sustainable strategies such as rainwater management and vegetation to reduce the heat island effect, promoting biodiversity and enhancing the health and well-being of surrounding communities.
Integrated with its surrounding urban, industrial, and natural landscapes, each REM station is created from a standardized set of adaptable modular components, allowing for optimal functionality and adaptability. The stations are designed to take into consideration their own unique geographic challenges and environmental contexts, from crossing highways with panoramic views to diving below ground.
“This is a project that builds on the rich tradition of iconic infrastructural projects that have defined Montreal’s past, while offering a new vision towards a more sustainable future,” says Duff Balmer, design principal at Perkins&Will. “We are deeply honoured to have been part of this exciting project.”
