Last month, Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) recognized Québec projects with design awards for excellence.

The groups’ annual Steel Design Awards of Excellence in the province honoured 13 projects in nine categories. The winners included:

  • Green Building Projects: Bibliothèque du Boisé, Boulevard Thimens (St. Laurent);
  • Stairs and Architectural Walkway Projects: Escaliers monumental du Pavillon des sciences et technologies de la santé, Collège John Abbott (Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue);
  • Commercial—Institutional Projects: Bibliothèque Guy-Bélisle (St. Eustache); and
  • Young Architects/Engineers Projects: Réaménagement du Casino de Montréal (Montréal).

The 2013 CISC Lifetime Achievement Awards were also announced at the group’s annual convention in September. These honours are distributed to Canadian industry members who have contributed to the development and advancement of the steel industry.

This year’s winners are:

  • Alan Lock, a 40-year veteran of the steel fabrication and erection industry who held the position of CISC Atlantic Regional Manager for nearly a decade;
  • Paul Collins, founder of structural steel fabricators, Collins Industries Ltd., and holder of various CISC positions including Alberta Regional Chair and member of the National Marketing Committee;
  • Siegfried Stiemer, PhD, structural steel design educator, who has been a professor of civil in engineering and member of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) welding aluminum standard committee and Canadian Welding Society; and
  • Stig Skarborn, a designated international welding engineer, he has operated a consulting firm since 1981 as well as participated in Canadian Standards Association (CSA) welding aluminum standard development and is a member of the American and Canadian Welding Societies.
