An ASTM International standard has been proposed for the process of reusing returned, new concrete.
ASTM WK39876, Specification for Returned Fresh Concrete for Use in a New Batch of Ready-mixed Concrete, is currently being established by Subcommittee C09.40.
The standard was proposed to address the waste of usable concrete being disposed of. Although some of the returned concrete is still serviceable, current standards require it to all be discarded.
“Today, concrete is often returned to the plant, such as when a contractor orders too much material,” chair of the task group developing the standard, Eric Koehler, toldConstruction Canada Online. “The goal of the specification is to provide criteria for assuring returned concrete is of suitable quality for reuse in a second batch. Engineers and specifiers can increase the recycled content of their concrete mixes while assuring that the concrete is of high quality.”
