Specifying better enclosures for capybaras

(Belated) April Fool’s!

Construction Canada prides itself on covering a wide range of topics related to the built environment, whether delving into new material advancements or exploring strategies for delivering better, more efficient projects. Sometimes, we also like to have a little fun.

Readers were alerted to a trio of stories over the past weekend:

• “Bangkok tower constructed completely from recycled plastic;”
• “Wired glass: Considerations for capybara enclosures;” and
• “Saskatoon city council approves funding for massive subway system.”

Of course, Saturday also just coincidentally happened to be April Fool’s Day.

In other words, while recycled polymer materials have come a long way, giant-rodent security is important[1], and the Paris of the Prairies is booming, this was just our way of having fun with readers.

A few of you also shared your own pranks from years past. Here are three of our favourites:

“One previous March 31, my associate and I went into our boss’ office after he left for the night, and turned everything in his office the opposite direction: Desk, computer, filing cabinet, waste bin—everything! When he came in to his office the next morning, we were all waiting eagerly, as he went to hang up his coat on the rack, and then almost dropped it on an empty spot, as the coat/hat rack was moved (as was everything) to the opposite side of the room. When he stood speechless in the doorway, we were all out in the open office, and yelled in unison, ‘April Fool’s Day!!!’ Needless to say, we had to move it all back, but it sure was fun to see his expression. He has a good sense of humor, and we still joke about this event to this day.”

“A couple years ago, a coworker and I stayed late on March 31st to blow up hundreds of balloons to fill up our boss’ office. We closed the blinds just enough so he couldn’t see the balloons from outside and we showed up early to be there when he opened his door. The balloons made it up to the desktop—he had to wade through it all to sit down and get started. The popping of the balloons afterward was probably the most fun.”

“I once came into work in the morning to find my desk and everything on it covered in aluminum foil. Even my chair had been covered! I spent the whole first hour of my day cleaning it up, but it was all in good fun.”
