Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is pushing for more wind energy projects in Alberta.

The group’s report, WindVision 2025: A Strategy For Alberta, addresses the need for an increased presence of wind energy in the province based on its available resources. Alberta currently sits behind Ontario and Québec when it comes to installed wind energy capacity.

WindVision 2025 proposes measures that will address barriers to wind energy development and help the province meet its goals of reduced greenhouse gas emissions while returning to a leadership role in clean renewable energy production,” said CanWEA’s president Robert Hornung.

The creation of additional wind farms is difficult because of the competitive electrical market. However, WindVision 2050 demonstrates Alberta’s ability to produce 5000 MW of more affordable energy.

CanWEA suggests implementing two complementary policies—Clean Electricity Act and an increase in carbon price—would allow the industry to get past the barriers it currently faces.
