CSC’s Vancouver Island Chapter is co-hosting a rammed earth house construction tour with the local Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) chapter on Thursday, October 6.
Tony Johnson (Earth House Holdings Ltd.[1]) will give an introduction about the Sooke project, and a discussion on rammed earth in general. Protective work gear (e.g. steel-toed boots, gloves, and eye/ear protection) will be needed for the active jobsite; attendees will also be sieving soil, mixing pigments, cement, and admixes, and using tools to test the strength of rammed earth forms.
To demonstrate quality control methods, two compression cylinders will be rammed to display how strength is affected. Participants will also be able to test the material’s high density and strength capabilities by pulling apart colour-mixed forms with tools, and there will be a sieve set analysis to show how suitable soils are selected. Depending on weather conditions, a laser thermometer will be brought out to aid in discussions of insulation, thermal mass, and different wall configurations.
The specific location will be given to those who register for the free tour. It will run approximately from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch.
Registered AIBC members will receive one CES Core Learning Unit for attending. For more information, click here[2].
