Quebec radio station’s design to integrate Innu culture

Radio CKAU’s new 240 m2 (2,690 sf) building in Montreal will highlight the crucial role the radio station plays in shaping the identity of the Uashat mak Mani-utenam community.
Designed by EVOQ Architecture, the building’s shape, textures of the exterior envelope, and the folded roofs replicate an Innu tent, called Pipun-shaputan.
Positioned in an L-shape, the two lighter volumes of the building are split with a darker one. The building’s base is clad in striated wood and the entrance has large vertical wooden elements.

The windows on the second floor are covered with perforated metal panels featuring a local pattern.
This project draws inspiration from elements of Innu culture and aims to preserve traditions and raise awareness of their issues.
