Équipe Laurence, an engineering firm based in Quebec, recently received two prestigious awards for its innovative energy-saving technology, dubbed “cloacothermie” at the awards ceremony, in the design of its Ste-Adèle head office.

The head office will be called Campus Équipe Laurence. It won two GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN awards in their 16th edition: a platinum prize in the sustainable building category and an award in the mechanical-electrical building category.

The head office project is largely inspired by a concept derived from geothermal energy—hydrothermal energy. The unique technology, developed by several engineers from Équipe Laurence and its architectural partner, TLA Architectes, for the heating and cooling of its head office, will draw energy from the aerated ponds near the city of Ste-Adèle’s water treatment plant.

This new concept guarantees a temperate water source year-round. This allows heat exchange with the wastewater for heating/air conditioning through two 150 mm (5.9 in.) diameter pipes installed in a directional borehole, without the aerated ponds, affected or damaged by the installation of the system, or modified in any way.

Twelve coil-type heat exchangers allow the pond’s heat to be absorbed in winters to heat the building. While in summers, the same principle in reverse, will cool the building. After only a few months of operation, the results far exceed initial expectations in terms of energy efficiency and dynamics.

“These are clearly demonstrated results,” says Alexandre Latour, president and CEO of Équipe Laurence. He adds that future buildings on the Camus Équipe Laurence site could also benefit from this same environmentally responsible technology. These results are monitored in real time, thanks to a weather station installed on the roof of the main building.

“We are proud to be making a difference with this innovation, which has the merit of being highly ecological and the virtue of being able to be applied elsewhere, throughout Quebec municipal world, where conditions permit, and thus contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of municipalities,” says Latour.
