Situated on a sloping, wooded terrain in Charlevoix, Que., the Chez Léon residence by Quinzhee Architecture is a modern chalet designed to harmonize with its surroundings, minimizing its ecological impact.
The design enables the structure to rise above the trees, providing views of the St. Lawrence River. The residence is tailored to the owners’ vision, featuring pilotis and sleek volumes with expansive south-facing bay windows, creating a modern esthetic. The entrance showcases a concrete monolith sliding perpendicular to the primary structure, leading to a spacious vestibule, laundry room, and bathroom. A cedar-clad staircase—clad with the same material used on the exterior—and hall demarcate the communal spaces from private bedrooms, with views of the mountain and river. The living areas connect to the outdoors, with privacy for the spa terrace at the rear. Thermal insulation is achieved through double-framed walls, with strict management of thermal bridges. Inside, comfort is ensured by an advanced heating, air conditioning, and ventilation system.
Embracing minimalism and using raw materials in their natural state, Chez Léon blends into the forest landscape and is reminiscent of a childhood treehouse with a contemporary, eco-friendly design.
