Push for environmental declarations for sealants

ASTM International and Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) are partnering to develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) through education and third-party verification.

ASC will be focusing on developing Product Category Rules (PCR)—a set of requirements and guidelines for creating environmental declarations, including EPDs. International Standards Organization (ISO) 14025, Environmental Labels and Declarations–Type III Environmental Declarations: Principles and Procedures, is the governing standard for EPDs.

PCRs are created in product-specific categories to ensure environmental declarations follow the same set of rules. For example, EPDs for sealants would follow the same PCR guidelines.

ASC’s president Matt Croson explained toConstruction Canada Online the program will be valuable worldwide.

“Design engineers are looking for more data and information about the products they specify into a building design,” he said. “The challenge we face is to make sure the industry is aware of the effort, and that they actively participate in ASTM International’s meetings on the subject, especially the Product Category Rules meetings that will be created over the next few months.”

Earlier this year, ASTM Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants agreed to promote the PCR process for industry experts and plans for PCR development for sealants are moving forward.
