Ontario wood projects log awards

As part of a wood design conference held in Toronto earlier this month, Ontario projects were fêted for their use of forest products.

In addition to bringing together design/construction professionals for an exhibit hall and technical sessions, the 13th annual Wood WORKS Solutions Fair, organized by the Canadian Wood Council, highlighted buildings ranging from churches and healthcare facilities to multi-family housing. According to Marianne Berube, executive director of the Ontario initiative, there were more than 100 nominations—the most there has ever been.

Lululemon Athletica’s Yorkdale Mall (Toronto) location was praised for its use of wood with respect to interior design. Its team included Brothers Dressler and Quadrangle Architects.

“There are many reasons for the increased use of wood in contemporary architecture,” she said. “People understand and appreciate wood’s environmental benefits and, in many applications, designers and developers are also reporting significant time and cost savings. Also, new products and design innovations have expanded opportunities for using wood. Around the world we’re seeing that it is a viable option for all types of construction including midrise buildings, sustainable urban densification, and even tall wood buildings.”
