Ontario wood projects log awards

As part of a wood design conference held in Toronto earlier this month, Ontario projects were fêted for their use of forest products.

In addition to bringing together design/construction professionals for an exhibit hall and technical sessions, the 13th annual Wood WORKS Solutions Fair, organized by the Canadian Wood Council, highlighted buildings ranging from churches and healthcare facilities to multi-family housing. According to Marianne Berube, executive director of the Ontario initiative, there were more than 100 nominations—the most there has ever been.

“There are many reasons for the increased use of wood in contemporary architecture,” she said. “People understand and appreciate wood’s environmental benefits and, in many applications, designers and developers are also reporting significant time and cost savings. Also, new products and design innovations have expanded opportunities for using wood. Around the world we’re seeing that it is a viable option for all types of construction including midrise buildings, sustainable urban densification, and even tall wood buildings.”

Green Building Wood Design: Algonquin College’s Perth campus by GRC Architects and Adjeleian Allen Rubeli Ltd.;
Interior Wood Design: Lululemon Yorkdale (Toronto) by Lululemon Athletica, Brothers Dressler, and Quadrangle Architects;
Residential Wood Design: Kennisis Lake House (Haliburton) by Altius Architecture and CUCCO engineering + design;
Multi-unit Wood Design: Woodland Village stacked townhomes (London) by Orchard Design Studio, GB Architect Inc., and Strik Baldinelli & Associates Ltd.;
Institutional/Commercial Wood: Holy Spirit Church (Barrie) by Larkin Architect Ltd. and Stantec;
Institutional/Commercial Wood Design >$10 million: Oak Ridges Community Centre (Richmond Hill) by Perkins+Will Canada and Smith+Andersen;
Northern Ontario Excellence Award: Batchewana First Nations Health Facility (Rankin Reserve) by EPOH Inc. and STEM Engineering Group;
Jury’s Choice Award: Local Church of the Saints (Toronto) by C.Y. Lee Architect and Blackwell Structural Engineers;
Engineer Wood Advocate Award: David Moses, Moses Structural Engineers;
Architect Wood Advocate Award: CS&P Architects; and
Wood Champion Award: Steve Boyd, Quaile Engineering.
