Ontario projects win for steel designs

Toronto’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel won the Award of Excellence in the Engineering category at this year’s Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) Ontario Steel Design Awards. The five-storey podium at the tower’s base features a large glass exterior to create a sense of interaction between the street and the lobby, and mediate between the pedestrian scale and the larger urban scale of the tower. A major hotel, river bridge, and a border crossing facility were among this year’s Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) winning projects in the 21st Ontario Steel Design Awards.

“The awards are to share and recognize steel design and innovation excellence—helping to keep the Ontario industry on the leading edge,” Suja John, CISC’s Ontario regional manager, told Construction Canada Online. “The awards are also to raise the profile of the province’s steel industry, promote awareness of the advantages of steel in construction, and to create networking opportunities for architects, engineers, building officials, contractors, and other stakeholders in the fabrication industry.”

The award categories included:
• Architectural–buildings or other structures in which architectural considerations predominantly influenced the design of the structure;
• Engineering–buildings, bridges, process plants or other structures in which engineering considerations predominantly influenced the design and construction of the structure;
• Green Buildings–buildings or other structures in which steel has been reused, recycled or used as part of a sustainable development project; and
• Projects Constructed Outside of Ontario–industrial buildings or other structures constructed outside of the province that have been fabricated by a CISC Ontario Region Fabricator.

This year’s Award of Excellence winners include:
• Architectural–Queenston Plaza Border Crossing Facility, Phase 1 & 2, Moriyama & Teshima Architects;
• Engineering–The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Page+Steele/ IBI Group Architects;
