Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford has revealed a $1.6 billion allocation for the construction of two new facilities at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, marking a stride in the province’s mental health support strategy.

According to a report by CityNews Ottawa, the funding will go towards the development of a Secure Care and Recovery Building and a Discovery Centre, expanding CAMH’s forensic mental health program to aid individuals entangled with the justice system.

CAMH’s president and CEO, Sarah Downey, hailed the project as a transformation of the Queen Street West site into a beacon of hope for mental health care. The Secure Care and Recovery Building will add 33 beds, increasing patient capacity to 214, while the Discovery Centre will consolidate research facilities into a state-of-the-art hub for mental health advancement. Premier Ford emphasized the importance of backing CAMH, a crucial provider of mental health and addiction services benefiting people province-wide.
