Ontario Building Code (OBC) is set to receive the largest revision for any province yet. The new code will harmonize with the National Model Codes.
The 2024 Building Code will streamline processes for the sector and eliminate around 1,730 technical variations between the provincial and national requirements.
The code will become effective on Jan. 1, 2025, with a three-month grace period until March 31, 2025, for specific designs already underway.
Some of the changes include focus on:
- Improved energy efficiency standards
- More rigorous accessibility criteria
- Greater emphasis on sustainability
- Revisions to safety and structural stability
- Simplified approval procedures
Builders will have until March 31, 2025, to use the 2012 Building Code. After this date, they must transition to the updated 2024 Building Code, more closely aligned with the NBC.

Sure would be nice if I could actually buy a hard copy, to start reviewing the new Code, compared to the old one…Always an “Out of stock” message on the Publications Ontario website, so you have to ask to be notified…. Should it not have been ready to purchase by now?
