Last month, the winners of the 2014 Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Awards were announced, honouring projects from single-family homes to large redevelopments.

Under the Design Excellence category, 15 projects were selected from 170 submissions based on the following criteria:
- design innovation;
- contribution to surrounding location;
- sustainability (i.e. considerations include reduced use of raw materials and dependence on fossil fuels, daylighting, air quality, and material use); and
- how well the project supports architectural goals through programming and design.
The 15 projects earning Ontario architects Design Excellence awards include:
- Ottawa’s Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (Diamond and Schmitt Architects and Edward J. Cuhaci and Associates Architects);
- Toronto’s Centennial College Athletic and Wellness Centre (Kongats Architects);
- Toronto’s Centennial College Library and Academic Facility (Diamond and Schmitt Architects);
- Brampton’s Chinguacousy Park Redevelopment (MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects); and
- Toronto’s Moore Park Residence (Drew Mandel Architects).
“This year’s award juries have chosen a diverse group of winners exemplifying architecture that creatively responds to the needs of the communities and clients,” OAA’s president, Bill Birdsell, told Construction Canada Online.
More than 30 winners will be awarded in nine categories at the ceremony taking part in Montréal on May 9 as part of the annual OAA conference. Additionally, the public is now able to cast its votes for the OAA’s People’s Choice Award. Voters can choose one of the 15 Design Excellence winners to be the recipient.
