The design for the recently opened Montreal tattoo shop, BlackSwan Studio, embraces a combination of subtlety and distinction, redefining the conventionally held notion about the “intimidating” tattoo parlour.

“In an era of increasing tattoo democratization since the beginning of the century, as well as a desire for personal affirmation and ownership of one’s own body, the tattoo salon offering has continued to grow, with a desire to differentiate itself from the sometimes-intimidating appearance typically associated with these places,” says Gatline Artis, owner and lead designer at Espace 313, the interior design firm responsible for the project. “It is in this perspective that the client approached us with the ambition to reinvent the traditional image of the tattoo salon, favouring a soft and refined esthetic.”

The design firm aimed to craft an exclusive space exuding unapologetic elegance, appealing to those seeking a unique experience. The space relies on the strengths of the existing space with strong and contrasting conceptual interventions, shaped with a modern artistic spirit. The team of designers agreed to showcase raw and distinctive materiality within the budget constraints. As an example, prefabricated cabinetry was subtly included in the design.

As visitors step inside, a blend of materials and textures welcomes them. A plaster-covered reception desk stands out against the backdrop of an enigmatic metal sculpture, which, in turn, is highlighted against a soft light-filtering white veil in its background. The dramatic entrance design invites visitors an entry into a space, evoking the alternate dimension. In a holistic sense, the interplay of various materials such as concrete, carpet, chair textiles, and mirrors create a unique atmosphere.

Like a tattoo on the skin, the aspiration to integrate distinctive dark elements into a brighter space guided the designers’ thinking, and contrast became one of the fundamental pillars of the concept. Accordingly, bordering the entrance and lounge area, a black architectural cube houses all the utilitarian functions of the studio, such as storage, wardrobe, kitchen, and display shelves. Three black arches, subtly echoing the curves of the logo, mark the entrance to the creative space, while providing a view of the artists at work from the lounge area.

The welcoming lounge area, flooded with natural light, encourages collaboration and creativity. Minimalist workstations, devoid of distractions, desired by the owner, do not allow artists to impose their identities on the space, putting emphasis on the designs at hand. A sculptural light installation resembling a swan’s wings graces the tattooing area, without interrupting the views out of the windows.

Espace 313’s collaboration with the client focused on tactile materiality, distinctive elements, and powerful contrasts, creating a unique identity for this Montreal tattoo studio.
