Across Canada in the month of February, a total of $6 billion was issued in building permits—a 1.7 per cent increase from the previous month.
Although the overall value of building permits has been declining since late last year, the non-residential sector in eight provinces has increased the numbers.
Commercial construction intentions, specifically in Alberta and British Columbia, accounted for a 13.2 per cent increase to $1.5 billion. Many of these permits were issued for recreational facilities, office buildings, and warehouses. Institutional building increased 27.8 per cent to $447 million, after a nearly 30 per cent decrease in January. Finally, industrial permit values rose 34.7 per cent to $400 million. These projects—mostly in Alberta, Ontario, and Newfoundland—include utility structures and transportation-related buildings.
The largest overall building intention increase was seen in Alberta, followed by Québec, Manitoba, and Ontario.
In terms of residential building, the seventh consecutive decrease for multi-family structures was reported, down 19.1 per cent to $1.3 billion. Prince Edward Island was the only province not reporting a decline.
