New Sudbury water sports facility in the works

After outgrowing its current location, construction on a new facility for Sudbury, Ont.’s Northern Water Sports Centre (NWSC) is expected to begin next month.

The $3.7-million, 1383-m² (14,900-sf) project, designed by Yallowega Bélanger Architecture, will replace the current facilities and provide new space for the city’s canoe club, rowing club, and dragon boat festival. The expanded centre will offer more lessons, events, and summer camps to residents.

The new location was orchestrated by ensuring maximum exposure to water, access to public beaches, and maintaining the site’s natural features. A set of floating docks will contribute to offsetting any land disruption.

Overall, two structures will be constructed. The first is a 901-m² (9700-sf) wood frame, two-storey, fully-accessible main building including boat storage, training areas, and a fully-equipped kitchen. The second is a 482-m2 (5200-sf) wood-framed cold boat storage for dragon boats and rowing shells.

Sustainable features have been included in the multi-purpose facility’s design. These include:

• increased daylighting in regularly occupied spaces;
• deep roof overhangs on the east and west building faces;
• operable windows to maximize on natural ventilation; and
• establishing comfort levels in all areas of the building to reduce energy consumption through heating and cooling.

“We are ecstatic to finally reach this point in the project,” Thomas Merritt, NWSCB chair told Construction Canada Online. “It has taken us years to reach this milestone and to finally be able to tell the public that construction is now starting on the Northern Water Sports Centre.”
