Building to Zero Exchange (BTZx) was recently launched in Halifax, marking a significant stride in advancing cross-sector collaboration and capacity building within the building industry, with a specific emphasis on low-carbon buildings.

Given that buildings contribute a substantial portion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Halifax, like many Canadian cities, this initiative holds particular importance in the city’s journey toward net-zero.

Lara Ryan, a consultant with the BTZx, highlighted the pivotal role of buildings—constituting around 45 per cent of GHG emissions—when considering materials and operations.

As the industry aims for net-zero status by 2050, aligning with government targets, organizations such as the Zero Emissions Building Exchange (ZEBx) in Vancouver are actively supporting this work.

Until recently, Halifax faced a gap in addressing this aspect of the building industry.

About a year and a half ago, Ryan explored the possibility of establishing an organization akin to ZEBx for Atlantic Canada, leading to the public launch of BTZx. The organization received overwhelming support for its role as a virtual space for professionals to engage and learn from each other.

Supported by grants, BTZx developed a governance structure and strategic plan, with foundational partners including EfficiencyOne, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), Clean Foundation, Construction Association of Nova Scotia, Halifax Regional Municipality, and the Province of Nova Scotia. BTZx has already enlisted 35 organizations as members at its public launch.

To support the industry’s net-zero goal, BTZx focuses on building capacity, enabling conditions, and accelerating action. Recognizing a need for climate literacy, the organization collaborates with NSCC to develop a micro-credential offered through various groups, addressing a gap in the training of industry professionals.
