A new industry group, Sustainable Labs Canada/Labs Écologiques du Canada (SLCan), has been established to share technical advances among the country’s laboratory facilities community. Its goal is improving energy efficiency and environmental responsiveness among those designing and operating high-tech facilities.

According to SLCan, the Canadian government operates 200 diverse laboratory sites across the country; the group also points out virtually all provinces and territories own or operate such facilities, in addition to similar labs run by myriad universities, hospitals, and private entities.

A member of the Global Sustainable Laboratory Network, SLCan encourages a sustainable, ‘whole-building’ approach in creating and maintaining labs. The group also aims to support professional development and education through workshops, seminars, and webinars.
