Montreal-based interior design firm, Imperatori Design, led a major transformation of Association des professionnels de la construction et de l’habitation du Québec’s (APCHQ’s) workplace—which previously remained unchanged for three decades—to align the old, hierarchical office environment with the association’s current values.

To achieve this, Imperatori Design collaborated closely with a project committee formed by APCHQ, fostering open communication and creative input. The result is a welcoming and adaptable space that combines contemporary office design with the association’s ethos.

Upon entering, visitors enter an open reception area leading to multipurpose rooms visible through glass partitions. The versatility of the architectural components of this area offers a variety of configurations, adapting to the changing needs of the occupants. Pivot doors delineating the space from the adjacent cafe area reveal an oasis for users where they can relax and recharge.

The upper floors now house collaborative workspaces bathed in natural light, offering views of the neighbourhood. Closed spaces are grouped around a central core, while workstations are arranged in an open layout with informal meeting zones. Soundproof rooms enhance acoustic comfort, and a skylight on the top floor creates a communal coffee area.

The interior design employs a mineral palette of white, grey, and earth tones, with White Oak (generously used in Quebec) lending a homey touch. Hot-rolled steel adds texture and depth, while the occasional felt wall panels or openwork enhance visual comfort and acoustics.

Eco-friendly materials and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification considerations underline the focus on air quality and user comfort.

Playful graphics encourage stair use for inter-floor connectivity and construction-themed visual cues aid wayfinding. The APCHQ logo, crafted from hot-rolled steel panels, serves as the finishing touch, representing a modern APCHQ for today and tomorrow.
