On the shores of Quebec’s Lake of Two Mountains, “The Slate,” a custom residential project, emerges as a testament to luxury harmonized with nature.
Designed by Blouin Beauchamp Architectes, the design, aimed at integrating modern luxury with environmental consciousness, features two distinct volumes: a square-shaped living area and a linear garage volume featuring a car collection. The resultant L-shaped layout is completed by a landscaped plaza. The main entrance is located between the two volumes and is surrounded by slate walls and a garden at the front. This central space features a small interior garden facing the south, allowing light to filter in at midday.
The design prioritizes natural elements, with the extensive use of cedar and slate slabs and walls sourced from Quebec’s Eastern Townships. The single-level home includes accessibility features and revolves around an atrium, organizing living spaces, bedrooms, and the master suite. A water feature on slate slabs adds to the overall atmosphere. Outdoor living spaces include a veranda, terraces, and an infinity pool. Further, a large roof acts as a wooden veil, shading the facade from the sun and protecting it from the lake’s elements. The garage, which spans two levels, connects to the house’s living spaces on the ground floor, while the basement is made accessible by reworking the site’s topography. Wooden cladding conceals the garage doors.
Efforts to reduce the environmental impact include an efficient envelope design and high-performance mechanical systems. This was achieved by consulting with experts in energy simulations to optimize the sizing and orientation of fenestration, triple glazing, and thermal insulation. The forced air heating system, radiant floors, and air conditioning are combined with a geothermal loop for efficient climate control. The material choices and design strategies aim to minimize resource and energy consumption, with the project delicately balancing sustainability with luxury living.
