Message from the president: The power of volunteerism

People around the globe engage in volunteering efforts for a variety of reasons: to support a cause that is near and dear; give back to the community; connect with others; advance their careers; or simply bring fun and fulfilment to their lives.

Volunteering has many benefits. It allows people to come together and build friendships; fosters collaboration and development of professional relationships; permits the development of new skills and the sharpening of existing ones; boosts performance; and helps build one’s resume. There are also many health benefits to volunteering, too. Like combating depression and counteracting the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety, while also increasing self-confidence and providing one a sense of purpose.

Often, I’m asked why I’m so involved or why I’m willing to give up my personal time for the betterment of CSC. Simply answered, volunteering with CSC has allowed me to give back to my profession and to an organization that has given me so much. In some respects, it is my way of saying thank you. Through CSC, I’ve built long-lasting friendships both personally and professionally. I’ve built a network of trusted professionals who have fuelled me professionally including my career growth. CSC has also allowed me to share my skills (and grow them, too), expertise, knowledge, and connections to further the aims and objectives of the organization and the industry at large. It has enabled me to become a changemaker to bring effective, positive change for the betterment of not only CSC, but also our industry.

So, what are you waiting for? We’re fortunate to be part of an industry that is growing and thriving at rapid rates! Reach out to your local CSC Chapter (we have 15 across the country), your professional association, or organization and get involved! You’ll be surprised as to the benefits of volunteering and, most importantly, you’ll be able to give back to the industry without even knowing the full impact of your contribution.

CSC, as an organization, like many others, thrives on the efforts put forth by countless volunteers—including the board and executive council levels—across all our chapters. Our volunteers contribute to countless committees and collaborate with a multitude of organizations like Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), the Canadian Construction Association (CCA), Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), amongst many others. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization and without their hard work, dedication, and commitment, we would not be able to achieve half of what we do. In the words of Helen Keller, “alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” To my fellow volunteers at CSC, and to all those who volunteer their time and efforts for the betterment of the industry, thank you! Without you, our success wouldn’t be possible.

La puissance du bénévolat

Diverses raisons incitent les gens à travers le monde à s’impliquer dans des efforts de bénévolat : pour soutenir une cause qui les touche ou qui leur est chère, pour redonner à la collectivité, pour établir des liens avec les autres, pour faire progresser leur carrière, ou simplement pour ajouter du plaisir et un sentiment d’accomplissement à leur vie.

Le bénévolat comporte de nombreux avantages. Il permet aux gens de se rassembler et de créer des amitiés, de favoriser la collaboration et le développement de liens professionnels, de développer de nouvelles compétences et d’en perfectionner d’autres, d’améliorer le rendement et d’aider à étoffer son curriculum vitae. Le bénévolat comporte également de nombreux avantages pour la santé, notamment lutter contre la dépression, contrer les effets du stress, de la colère et de l’anxiété tout en augmentant la confiance en soi et en procurant le sentiment d’avoir un but.

On me demande souvent pourquoi je m’implique autant ou pourquoi je suis prêt à consacrer mon temps personnel à l’amélioration de DCC. Réponse simple : le bénévolat avec DCC m’a permis de redonner à ma profession et à une organisation qui m’a beaucoup donné. À certains égards, c’est ma façon de dire merci. Grâce à DCC, j’ai bâti des amitiés durables tant sur le plan personnel que professionnel. J’ai créé un réseau de professionnels de confiance qui m’ont nourri professionnellement, y compris dans mon avancement professionnel. DCC m’a également permis de partager mes compétences (et aussi de les améliorer), mon expertise, mon savoir et mes contacts afin de faire avancer les buts et objectifs de l’organisation et de l’industrie dans son ensemble. DCC m’a permis de devenir un faiseur de changement et ainsi apporter des changements efficaces et positifs non seulement pour le mieux-être de DCC, mais aussi de toute l’industrie.

Alors, qu’attendez-vous? Nous avons la chance de faire partie d’une industrie qui grandit et prospère très rapidement! Contactez votre section régionale de DCC (15 à travers le pays), votre association ou organisation professionnelle, et impliquez-vous! Vous serez surpris des avantages du bénévolat et, plus important encore, vous serez en mesure de redonner à l’industrie sans même connaître tout l’impact de votre contribution.

DCC, en tant qu’organisation et comme beaucoup d’autres, prospère grâce aux efforts de ses innombrables bénévoles—y compris le conseil et l’exécutif—dans toutes les sections. Nos bénévoles contribuent aux nombreux comités et collaborent avec une multitude d’organisations telles que le Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), l’Association canadienne de la construction (ACC), l’Institut royal d’architecture du Canada (IRAC), parmi tant d’autres. Les bénévoles sont la pierre angulaire de notre organisation et sans leur travail, leur dévouement et leur engagement, il nous serait impossible de réaliser même la moitié de ce que nous faisons. Dans les mots d’Helen Keller, « seuls, nous pouvons faire si peu; ensemble, nous pouvons faire tant. » À mes collègues bénévoles de DCC, et à tous ceux qui donne temps et efforts à l’amélioration de l’industrie, merci! Sans vous, notre succès serait impossible.

Je suis un fier bénévole. Je suis DCC.
