As the holiday season approaches and another year draws to a close, I hope you take this opportunity to reflect on where you have been this past year, and where you plan or hope to be in 2020. Too often, we get caught up in our day-to-day lives, and fail to reflect on where we have been and where we are going. We stay in unsatisfying jobs or positions and relationships that drain our energy, or continually encounter situations or circumstances that leave us stressed, tired, and unhappy. Being on autopilot without reflection can lead to doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results—this was Einstein’s definition of insanity. Self-reflection has many positive effects when implemented on a regular basis. Here are some benefits of self-reflection.
Provides perspective
Self-reflection allows you to look at and understand things from a different perspective and/or an alternate point of view. When you allow yourself to step back and be open to different perspectives on things, you gain new understanding and/or ways of perceiving the issue at hand.
Improved self-awareness
Self-awareness is essential to understanding yourself on a deeper level. What do you value? What do you hold in high regard? What brings you fulfillment? What makes you happy? If you want to get really clear on how you feel about something or what your core values are, follow up with why?
Emotional intelligence
With self-reflection you are able to see yourself using multiple lenses. Different perspectives will aid in tapping into your emotions and understanding them from various vantage points. In paying attention to your thoughts and beliefs, you can better understand your emotions and reactions to a particular situation. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify emotions in you and others, and choosing an appropriate response.
As this is the season for gifts and giving, may you consider giving yourself the gift of time for self-reflection, relaxation, and rejuvenation throughout the year. I wish you all the best this holiday season. Here’s to a healthy, happy, and prosperous 2020!
