Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger announced an increased funding plan for building highways, roads, and bridges throughout the province.
The plans include funding for municipal infrastructure projects through the Building Manitoba Fund, which includes a $3.5 billion investment over the next decade, for municipal road and bridge projects across the province. The focus for the next three years will be on repairing potholes and improving residential streets within Winnipeg.
“These new investments will mean better roads and good jobs, and they will help stimulate our economy, moving Manitoba forward through the ongoing global economic uncertainty,” Selinger said during the announcement.
Also within the next three years, other municipalities can apply for funding for road projects.
The Manitoba Building and Renewal Plan includes $622 million for bridges and highways, including infrastructure damaged by flooding in 2011. Provincial projects will also be part of a cost-share program. These include $25 million in an Urban Highway Fund and Commercial Infrastructure Fund. Municipalities will be able to get assistance from the provincial government for various projects.
