Université Laval (Québec City) won second place at this year’s National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC). The event, hosted by the University of Nevada last month, was the 25th edition of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) race.

Known as “the America’s Cup of Civil Engineering,” NCCC aims to bring awareness about concrete technology, as well as its versatility in construction.

Laval’s entrant, “Borealis,” took second behind three-time champion California Polytechnic State University–San Luis Obispo, and their canoe, “Prospector.”

The design/engineering competition is made up of athletic and academic events over three days, beginning with a paper written by the students explaining the design and construction of their canoe, and ending with a series of five races with their creations. The participants are all winners of 18 conference competitions held this past spring; Laval is a 10-time winner of the Canadian qualifier.
