Calgary’s composting ground, the largest in-vessel composting facility in North America, has officially broken ground.

Operated by AIM Environmental Group, the facility currently processes upwards of 145,500 tonnes (160,386 tons) of residential food and yard waste, and dewatered biosolids every year.

The 48,402 m2 (521,000 sf) facility is made up of three buildings: main, curing, and storage building.

In 2022, Calgary City Council approved an expansion of the facility, with construction currently underway. The expansion will add an extra 60,000 tonnes (66,138 tons) of processing capacity to support the Green Cart program.

“We’re set to increase our capacity by 60 per cent, which translates to an impressive 160,000 tonnes [176,369 tons] of food and yard waste on an annual basis,” says Mayor Jyoti Gondek.

The project is expected to be completed in late 2025.
