Holcim subsidiary switches to low carbon cement production at B.C. plant

Sustainable building solutions company, Lafarge Canada, a member of Holcim Group, has switched to producing a new brand of low-carbon cement, offering a minimum of 30 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne (ton) in comparison to Portland cement.
Branded as ECOPlanet, the variant has replaced the production of previous varieties at the plant. This step cements the company’s decarbonization strategy and makes it the first cement plant within the Holcim Group worldwide to qualify 100 per cent of its cement production to ECOPlanet.
The Government of British Columbia and CleanBC Industry Fund have been instrumental in facilitating decarbonization projects efficiently. Through the Innovation Accelerator Fund (IAF), the Richmond plant received funding to assist with the addition of supplementary cementitious materials and has been the key factor in decreasing the greenhouse gasses (GHG) per tonne (ton) of cement produced on site.
“This is a proud moment for our organization,” says Brad Kohl, president and CEO of Lafarge Canada (West). “This conversion in Lafarge’s Western Canada division highlights our strong commitment to accelerating green growth. As leaders in sustainable building solutions, we take pride in having a positive impact on building solutions across its lifecycle, without compromising the quality and long-term durability of our products.”
