Construction has started on “Haleco,” a mixed-use development project in Montreal and the winner of C40’s Reinventing Cities competition.

The 31,442 m2 (338,439 sf) development was designed to set an example of developing low-carbon housing, offering solutions for climate change such as an urban farm roof and energy supply.

It will include 327 units and 40 community housing units built in co-operation with Bâtir son quartier, which is co-ordinating the execution of this component of the project. The teams at ACDF and L’OEUF Architectes are responsible for project design.

The project is aiming for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification with a design focused on energy efficiency. The designers have gone beyond the usual energy-saving parameters for residential buildings with an envelope which stands out for its thermal resistance, resilience, and energy performance.

Special attention has been paid to the project’s energy supply; it will have a 100 per cent electric system designed to be as efficient as possible, with integrated renewable energy generation systems on each floor of the building.
