A portion of the historic grounds and heritage buildings of the former Royal Victoria Hospital site are being transformed into a new hub for McGill University.
The project will comprise restored Scottish baronial heritage buildings and new construction.
The landscape forecourt of the heritage wings has been restored, and new accessible entryways welcome students, teachers, and visitors.
There will be several types of labs, offices, classrooms, a library, a cafeteria, and spaces for working collaboratively. Additionally, the complex will feature sustainable technologies such as geothermal energy and green roofs.
The roofscapes of the new wings are designed to extend the landscape of Mount Royal.
The design will include architectural elements that reflect Indigenous people and culture’s continued presence and influence on this territory and at McGill.
Diamond Schmitt and Lemaymichaud Architecture are the design architects, and the project is estimated to be completed by 2028.
The project is a WELL Gold candidate and is aiming for a LEED Gold certification.
