The new Tofino Beach Lodge, designed by Eerkes Architects, will feature moss green throughout its design and draw further inspiration from its surrounding forest and ocean shoreline.
The 1,467 m2 (15,800 sf) lodge and 3,623 m2 (39,000 sf) hotel will float on elevated concrete piers. The glass-enclosed lodge will feature a polished concrete floor with exposed beams and wood panelling.
The fireplaces will feature thin vertical concrete flutes that form a bark-like texture. Above the fireplace, Shou Sugi Ban panelling—a traditional Japanese technique that preserves wood by charring it with fire—will replicate the tones of the forest.
Guestrooms and suites will be designed in lighter shades that draw from the beach. Rooms will include light-stained oak floors with exposed wood panelling and beams and white oak cabinetry complemented by neutral-toned linen.
The rainforest lodge will be located on the west coast of Vancouver Island within the UNESCO Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve and on the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation. Native plants such as spruce, cedar, and fir trees will surround the buildings.
