Atelier L’Abri has introduced the Kanata Cabin, a silver-clad rental home in the Canadian Laurentians of Mont-Tremblant, Que. The 60-m2 (650-sf) single-bedroom cottage, affectionately named “La Niche,” embodies simplicity and elegance in its design, offering a unique escape for nature enthusiasts and their pets.
Born from the client’s vision of a pet-friendly rental cottage, La Niche combines functionality with minimalism, featuring a compact footprint that harmonizes with the forested hills. The cabin’s vernacular gable-shaped roof and a distinctive arched doorway create a striking yet unassuming presence, reminiscent of a doghouse nestled in the landscape. The cabin’s design features a pet-friendly arched nook in the kitchen island cabinetry, catering to both visitors and their furry companions.
The interior, though spatially modest, imparts a sense of grandeur through a high cathedral ceiling, naturally lit living spaces, and panoramic views of the Boreal Forest. Silver-coloured wood cladding, interspersed with vertical baguettes, supposed to age over time, blend with the deciduous surroundings.
Despite a budget-conscious approach, the Kanata Cabin prioritizes sustainability. Its exterior walls, framed with 2×8 studs, exceed standard construction performance, allowing for the use of bio-sourced recycled cellulose fibre insulation and minimizing its carbon footprint. Built on a structural slab, the tiny house not only reduces costs and construction time, but also underscores Atelier L’Abri’s commitment to eco-friendly building practices.
Situated within the 1,214-ha (3,000-acre) Kanata Tremblant estate, the cabin offers a hyper-optimized plan, architectural simplicity, and commitment to sustainability. It also offers a distinctive retreat into nature, promising a one-of-a-kind experience for diverse visitors.
