CNN has named the Halifax Central Library in Nova Scotia as “one of the most extraordinary structures” of 2014.

The Halifax Central Library was designed by Danish firm schmidt hammer lassen. Construction on the 14,500-m2 (156,076-sf) project began in 2010 and will be completed this year. The library will serve multiple functions in the community and is situated within Halifax’s downtown core, next to Dalhousie University’s Architecture School.

The building’s design features a vegetated roof terrace, and a façade reflective of the local history and seasonal nature of the surrounding trees with a theme of leaves appearing in varying densities. During the design process, public meetings and consultations were held within the community to allow future library users a chance to provide input in the facility’s design. The project is targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

Other buildings on CNN’s list include:

  • Guangzhou Circle Mansi (Guangzhou, China);
  • The Leadenhall Building (London, England);
  • Shanghai Tower (Shanghai, China);
  • Rotterdam Market Hall (Rotterdam, Netherlands); and
  • Tower Infinity (Seoul, South Korea).
