Interior design firm, FOR. design planning has brought the world of French author Jules Verne’s novel, The Mysterious Island, to life with the creation of L’Île Mystérieuse—a museum, restaurant lounge, and boutique.
The project stems from a Verne enthusiast who, after amassing over 300 artifacts, transformed the 20th-century building, nicknamed the Blue House. The Blue House underwent meticulous renovations, preserving the stone walls and fireplaces while adding a modern glass extension. A curtain-wall extension houses the mini-museum and boutique, adorned with a custom-made fresco depicting the protagonist of the novel, Captain Nemo’s tragic demise. The restaurant entrance features a backlit map of the island, while a bay window and porthole portray maritime scenes and sea creatures, creating an immersive experience for visitors.
Inside, the museum recreates a 19th-century cigar lounge atmosphere with Verne’s first editions, ship models, and artistic displays. Rattan furniture, coffered walls, and cabinetry details reminiscent of old china cabinets capture the essence of the period.
The path through Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea-themed decor takes you past a bronze mesh bar and staircase, resembling a submarine’s descent into a watery vortex. The ceiling sparkles with lights mimicking the Aquarius constellation—Verne’s zodiac sign. Perforated metal divides the public area and dining space, near a bronze arch marking the restaurant entrance.
Descending the staircase leads to abyss-like washrooms. Custom-designed wallpaper displays skulls, eerie fish, eels, and golden coral. A subtle lantern-like spotlight illuminates the surroundings, resembling the soft glow of a lantern fish. Beneath a mirrored dome at the washbasin, visitors may experience an effect similar to being observed through a magnifying glass or telescope.
L’Île Mystérieuse is the story of a collector’s passion. However, it is also a tribute to the co-owner’s grandfather, father, and brothers, who all served as ship captains on the St. Lawrence River. L’Île Mystérieuse is a tribute to them all, and to Captain Nemo.
