CSC Vancouver Chapter talks world’s tallest building

by | October 12, 2016 9:26 am

On Thursday, October 13, the Vancouver Chapter of CSC will hold a luncheon discussion about Brock Commons—the University of British Columbia (UBC) student residence being billed as the tallest wood building in the world.

The 53-m (175-ft) 18-storey mass timber student residence comprises 17 floors of five-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels, point-supported by glued-laminated timber (glulam) columns. Beams were eliminated from the design by utilizing CLT’s two-way spanning capabilities. A single-storey concrete podium at the base, a prefabricated steel roof, and two full-height concrete cores for lateral stability complete the structure.

Due to a high level of pre-fabrication, the timber components and curtain wall for this project were installed at a ground-breaking pace of two floors per week this past summer. The project is proving to be cost-competitive with concrete towers in the local marketplace, which was largely achieved by an integrated design team, real-time input from trades, and structural discipline.

The talk will be led by Robert Jackson, the project’s structural engineer. The Fast + Epp expert will outline the structural system from a design and construction perspective, and discuss the unique challenges associated with this project (and the strategies used to overcome them).

The discussion (which earns Architectural Institute of British Columbia [AIBC] members one Core Learning Unit [LU]) will be held at the Sandman Hotel (180 West Georgia St.) ballroom, which is located straight through the restaurant at the back of Moxie’s. It begins at 11:30 a.m. with a full-course, self-serve buffet, and will be completed by 1:30 p.m. The cost is $38 for pre-registered CSC members and $48 for non-members, plus GST.
