A proposed ASTM International standard will determine the drying behaviour of new and existing concrete mix quantities.
Part of the overarching ASTM Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, Subcommittee C09.66 on Concrete’s Resistance to Fluid Penetration is developing ASTM WK37029, Test Method for Measurement of Mass Loss Versus Time for One-Dimensional Drying of Saturated Concretes.
Currently in the development stage, the standard’s goal is to offer information regarding the mass loss versus time (i.e. drying) of saturated concrete exposed to single-dimensional drying in a humid, temperature-controlled environment.
“The drying information provided by the test in ASTM WK37029 can be used to directly assess the drying propensity of a given concrete mixture,” said task group chair Dale Bentz. “This information could be valuable for industrial flooring applications where quick drying is often desirable.”
The standard would be used by ready-mix concrete manufacturers, testing laboratories, and industry consultants. During the development, Subcommittee C09.66 is hoping to work with testing facilities able to implement the standard.
