Polypropylene pipe for gravity flow sewer water applications was included in the new edition of the Ontario Provincial Standard Specification (OPSS) and Ontario Provincial Standard Drawing (OPSD) by the province’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

The MTO announcement includes dual- and triple-wall polypropylene (PP) pipe, in addition to the approved use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe in diameters of 100 to 1500 mm (3.9 to 59 in.).

The Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association (OHMPA) recognized asphalt plants with 2013 Trillium Awards and also recertified four plants at the annual Fall Asphalt Seminar last week.

The December 11 event marked the 22nd annual seminar and eleventh awards presentation. The awarded plants must meet criteria in categories from appearance to operations and environmental to safety.

At last week’s Greenbuild conference in Philadelphia, four Canadians were presented with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Fellow status.

Recipients were awarded during the show, which is the world’s largest green-building event. EED Fellow designation is presented to industry experts who have demonstrated leadership, innovation, and major contribution to green building.

The process of revamping Toronto’s Ontario Place will begin with creation of a waterfront park early next year.

The 3-ha (7.5-acre) park site and trail will replace a current parking lot and be free to the public. Last month, it was announced landscape architects LANDinc and West 8 were chosen to design the space. The firms were chosen for their experience with other North American large-scale waterfront projects.

Two Canadian projects were honoured at the 51st annual Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Awards.

A total of 20 projects were honoured ranging from bridges to multi-family structures in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The awards are given to projects showcasing the high-performance attributes of precast/prestressed concrete. These attributes include concrete spans on bridges, durability, and resilience to extreme weather.

Two Canadian projects received Special Citations at the 2013 Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) awards.

The organization annually presents four Awards of Distinction, 18 Awards of Excellence, and seven Special Citations.

Three Canadian projects were honoured at the 23rd Annual Tilt-Up Achievement Awards.

In nine categories, Tilt-up Concrete Association (TCA) handed out accolades to organizations, individuals, and projects successfully using site-cast tilt-up concrete in international projects.

Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) has honoured 13 of its members’ projects with its annual awards.

Winners are selected by a jury panel from projects submitted by AIBC members and firms. The program’s goal is to promote completed B.C. projects and their architects.

Toronto is set to host the 2014 American Public Works Association (APWA) International Public Works Congress & Exposition next summer.

The event draws more than 5000 public works professionals for networking, educational seminars, and more than 400 exhibiting companies. The last APWA Congress was held in Canada in 1988, explained president Ed Gottko.
