Two Canadian projects were among the winners of the 2013 North American Copper in Architecture (NACIA) Awards.
The Trafalgar Condominium Apartments in Montréal was honoured in the restoration/renovation category for its roof. The project includes a 3530-m2 (38,000-sf) copper, batten-seam roof system and was completed in 2010. Additionally, the Rideau Hall Front Entrance Handrail project in Ottawa received the ornamental application prize. The building is the official home to Canada’s Governor General and the newly designed handrail employs stock and machined-bronze components along with hand-tooled elements.
Beginning in 2008, the program is sponsored by Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association (CCBDA) and Copper Development Association (CDA); it recognizes projects using copper in design and architectural applications. Prizes are distributed in three categories—new construction, renovation/restoration, and ornamental applications. Entries are judged by a panel based on criteria including overall design, integration of copper, and craft of copper installation.
“The quality and diversity of the projects continue to impress us with their innovative and striking use of architectural copper,” Andy Kireta Jr., vice-president of CDA’s Building Construction program said. “From intricate wall-cladding systems to interior applications using different alloys, we continue to see this age-old metal being used in new and innovative ways.”
