International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) has presented its 2013 awards to concrete repair projects in Canada, United States, Mexico, and Poland.

Among this year’s winners was the repair done at EPCOR’s Gold Bar Water Treatment Plant in Edmonton, Alberta. This project team—EPCOR, Read Jones Christopherson (RJC) and general contractor, Sure-Form Construction Ltd.—received the International Award for Excellence in Sustainability of Concrete Repairs.

EPCOR, owner and operator of several wastewater treatment facilities, initiated a maintenance program for the deteriorating primary clarifier tanks. Significant structural repairs, waterproofing, and protection of concrete elements and connections were included in the project.

“This project required RJC to ensure all remaining and surrounding portions of the plant stayed in operation during evaluation and repair,” the firm’s principal, Daryl Prefontaine, told Construction Canada Online. “Environmental regulations also required all repairs to be performed only during winter months —the period with lowest influent levels. Additionally, a critical completion deadline required work to both primary clarifier tanks be returned to full service prior to the anticipated spring runoff date.”

The other Canadian 2013 winners are:

  • Longevity Category/Sustainability Award: Winnipeg Aqueduct Water-Leakage Repair (Vector Construction); and
  • Transportation Category: Turcot Interchange CFRP Repairs in Montréal (CarbonFibre).
