Canada will get its tallest mass timber building by 2026 with the construction of the University of Toronto’s (UofT’s) Academic Wood Tower. It will be the second tallest in North America, and the third tallest in the world.
The project will be undertaken by construction firm Pomerleau. The 14-storey building is set to stand at 77 m (252 ft) and is expected to become a landmark example of tall hybrid steel-timber structures.
The construction process will involve partial demolition and renovation of the existing building, building on top of the Goldring Centre for high-performance sport, and will also incorporate a prefabricated panelized building envelope system.
Additionally, artificial intelligence (AI) will be used to prevent quality issues on the site.
Pomerleau has built 20 mass timber projects in total, with the Academic Wood Tower being the first mass timber project in Ontario.
